  • What is DEF and Why is it Needed?

    Changes to EPA emission standards for diesel engines will require 2010 diesel engine makers to install a new control device called selective catalytic reduction (SCR). The device utilizes DEF, or diesel exhaust fluid, to chemically change exhaust. DEF is a mixture of purified deionized water and automotive grade urea.

  • What is SCR Technology?

    Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is a means of converting nitrogen oxides, or NOx, with the aid of a catalyst, into diatomic nitrogen and water. SCR is an effective way of cleaning up exhaust gases. Through this process, urea and deonized water are added to the exhaust gases. Heat from the exhaust system turns the urea to ammonia which then reacts with nitrogen oxide in the catalytic converter. SCR technology produces harmless nitrogen gas and water vapor.
